Theme: Emotion and Affective Turn: Integrating Brain, Mind and Body into Relationship Therapy

20 Oct 2017  19:00-21:30

Workshop 1: Hakomi Method - Putting mind, body and brain into the picture!  簡約身心治療法是以澄心,不帶批判,專注當下 身與心, 透過體驗回到關係。 Speaker : Dr. Susanna Wong-Ip 黃葉仲萍教授

This is an experiential workshop on some basic tenets of Hakomi. It will introduce how the body-mind inteface provides a road map to the organization of self. Participants will have ample experience to work on their right brain and left brain through exploring their mind in body and vice versa.

Hakomi Method is a form of mindfulness-centered somatic psychotherapy developed by Ron Kurtz in the 1970s. It integrates scientific, psychological, and spiritual sources. At its most basic level, Hakomi is the therapeutic expression of a specific set of Principles: Mindfulness, Nonviolence, Unity, Organicity and Mind-Body Integration; these tenets inform every aspect of the work.

Couples therapy has grown out from traditional family therapy into an independent discipline of mental health intervention over the past three decades. A new paradigm shift occurs in the treatment of couple distress with the exponential growth in research on emotion, attachment, and neuroscience. The intertwinement of emotional and relational processes becomes central in intimate relationships. Emotion-focused couples therapy (EFT-C) has outgrown other approaches in the treatment of couple distress as an evidence-based approach. It is an integration of experiential-humanistic approach and systemic approach in couples therapy. It is grounded in the person-centered relational attitudes and integrates contemporary emotion theory, interaction and communication theory with the methods of enactment in structural approach and Gestalt therapy. EFT-C proposes that it is emotion that fuels couples conflict and accessing to alternate emotion is the ultimate antidote to those conflicts. Enduring self change and couple change are achieved through emotion transformation and restructuring of new couple interaction.

The workshop explores the art and science of EMDR in the past decades since discovery in 1987. Research, theories and therapeutic approach are discussed in light of traumatic psychotherapy and other relationship therapy. According to the World Health Organization (2013) Guidelines for the Management of Conditions Specifically Related to Stress, Trauma-focused CBT and EMDR are the only psychotherapies recommended for children, adolescents and adults with PTSD. Besides treating traumatic stress, EMDR is also applied to enhance intimate relationships, artistic and atheletic performances.
